Rakuzen

All the products in the Rakuzen collection are handmade by skilled Aizu lacquerware craftsmen. The Aizu lacquerware industry is a traditional industry that has been passed down from generation to generation for more than 400 years. In the late sixteenth century, Gamō Ujisato, a feudal lord in the Aizu region, encouraged the establishment of Aizu lacquerware as a local business. While there are many different styles of lacquerware, Aizu lacquerware is particularly popular as it is not only beautiful, but is also a practical and affordable option for everyday use. Compared to the more luxurious Wajima lacquerware, Aizu lacquerware has always been loved for how easily it can be used in the home and the fact that it can be purchased at a more reasonable price, making it accessible to everyone.

A unique lacquering technique: Hana-nuri
Hana-nuri is a lacquering technique unique to Aizu lacquerware. When creating a piece of lacquerware using this technique, the final coat of lacquer is applied and finished without polishing the coated surface. This creates a unique luster as well as a feeling of plumpness and thickness for the finish, but requires great skill in order to avoid leaving any brush strokes or unevenness on the surface. This technique is sometimes referred to as “nuritate,” meaning “freshly painted.”

Lacquering technique: Fuki-urushi
Fuki-urushi is a lacquering technique in which the wood surface is coated with a thin layer of transparent fresh lacquer. The coated surface is then wiped off using a cloth, and the process is repeated to finish the coating. This style of lacquering accentuates the natural contrasts in wood patterns and is sometimes referred to as “suru-urushi,” meaning “rubbing lacquering.”

Every Rakuzen product is produced using a single piece of natural wood. Aizu lacquerware is carved and shaped sideways using a Suzuki potter’s wheel (a potter’s wheel invented by Jisaburo Suzuki in Aizu during the Meiji era). This method of carving wood in a direction perpendicular to the grain is called “yoko-hiki” and is a style characteristic of Aizu lacquerware. The shape of lacquerware made using this technique may distort ever so slightly over time, but lacquerware made using “yoko-hiki” will also be more resilient against external shocks.

1. Kidori: Cutting the wood
Enough wood for a single bowl is cut.

2. Aragata: Rough carving
A potter’s wheel is used to carve the wood into a rough bowl shape.

3. Polishing of the bowl
A file is used to polish the rough surface of the wood until it is smooth. Once this step has been completed, a regular wooden bowl is finished.

4. Insertion of the groove
A groove is made on the bottom of the bowl to make it easy to hold. As steps four and five cannot be performed by a machine, they require much time-consuming hand processing.

5. Shaping of the groove and finishing touches
A file is used to carefully shape the groove and then polish the entire bowl. This completes the Rakuzen wooden bowl base.

Rakuzen only produces hand-painted lacquerware created by skilled craftsmen. Universal design kitchenware tends to be made of inexpensive plastic, and while plastic is easy to handle, these products often look very much like nursing home equipment. We believe that enjoying a meal with a sense of fulfilment and independence is something that everyone would want to experience, even when they get older and lose much of their strength. Hand-painted lacquerware is something that is personal and meaningful to the person using it, and makes each meal seem even tastier.

1. 2. Sabi-dzuke: Rusting
After applying fresh lacquer to treat the surface of the wood, a spatula made of white cedar is used to apply lacquer mixed with burnt diatomite powder to coat the surface. (The diatomite powder may be substituted with urethane paint.)

3. Sabi-togi: Rust polishing
The rusted wood surface is polished and smoothed using a coarse whetstone.

4. Application of the base, middle, and top coats of lacquer
The surface of the bowl is coated with lacquer that has been filtered through Yoshino filter paper using a brush. The bowl is then dried in a drying chamber and polished with a whetstone.
This process of applying a coat of lacquer, filling in any cracks, drying, and polishing is repeated for three coats; the base, middle, and top coats.

5. Hana-nuri lacquering and fushimi
Any fine dust or bubbles are carefully removed from the surface of the bowl one at a time. This is a crucial step that ensures the lacquerware maintains its luster.

6. Drying and completion
The lacquer bowl is finally finished after it has been dried for a period of one to two and a half months. Japanese lacquer needs a certain level of moisture to solidify, making summer temperatures and humidity levels ideal for this final drying stage.
